PSU Opera Workshop sets two performances

The Pittsburg State University Opera Workshop is preparing to perform an opera written by a 12-year-old. That child prodigy was Mozart, whose “Bastien and Bastienne,” reflects the energy and lightheartedness of his youth. In addition, the Opera Workshop class will also perform Offenbach’s rarely performed comic opera, “The Lantern Marriage.” Both works will be performed on Feb. 9 and again on Feb. 11 in Pittsburg’s Memorial Auditorium. The performance on Feb. 9 is at 7:30 p.m. and the performance on Feb. 11 is at 3 p.m.

Patrick Howle, who directs PSU’s Opera Workshop, said both one-act operas will be performed in English. The Opera Workshop class will be accompanied by the PSU Chamber Orchestra, which includes students, faculty and community members.

Tickets are $6 for adults and $3 for children under 17 and seniors. Students and faculty with ID are admitted free. A discount rate of $4 is available for groups of 10 or more. Tickets are on sale at the PSU Ticket Office (620-235-4796) in the Overman Student Center and will also be available at the door the day of the performance.
