Schoolchildren compete in construction, architecture event
Elementary school children from throughout the area will participate in the first annual Block Kids event this weekend at Pittsburg State University.
The competition, which uses LEGO blocks to teach children about construction, architecture, and engineering, will take place at PSU beginning at noon on Saturday, Jan. 26, in Room S102 at the Kansas Technology Center.
More than 300,000 children have participated in the NOVA-award winning, nationwide event. The competition consists of children working in teams to construct a structure out of 100 interlocking blocks using only three small items such as string, foil, or poster board. For this year’s event at PSU, 500 LEGO blocks were donated by Crossland Construction. The event is sponsored by the National Association of Women in Construction.
In addition to savings bonds awards donated by University National Bank, this Saturday’s winning project will be sent to the regional competition. One regional semi-finalist will then be sent to the national competition.
For more information on the event, contact engineering technology instructor Dennis Audo at 620-719-9605.
