Commencement activities keep graduates busy

With Pittsburg State University’s 12th annual winter commencement scheduled for Friday night, several activities for graduates, their friends and families will be held leading up to the 7:30 p.m. ceremony.

Graduates are invited to take part in one of the university’s most beloved traditions: ringing the Centennial Bell, an activity they performed years ago as new freshman to mark their arrival at Pitt State. The bell, located at the southwest corner of Axe Library, will be available for ringing from 1-11 p.m. on Friday.

At 10 a.m., the Department of Military Science will host a commissioning ceremony for Anthony Wilkins. The ceremony’s guest speaker will be LTC Howard Wheeler, the commander of Kansas National Guard Armored Battalion 1-635. Wilkins, who will officially graduate Friday evening (and will be married the next day), will go on to serve with the military police corps.

From 4:30-5:30 p.m., College of Technology graduates and guests are invited to a reception at the Kansas Technology Center Rotunda. Then from 6-7 p.m., all graduates and their families are invited to attend the 2007 Commencement Reception, where light refreshments will be served. Faculty members, university administrators and staff will also be in attendance. The reception will be held on the second floor mezzanine of the Garfield W. Weede Physical Education Building.
